Drama
KEY STAGE 3.
Year 7
During year 7, students develop a number of different drama skills. Vocal and Physical skills are nurtured, especially work with the voice (tone, pitch and tempo) and movement (facial expressions, stance and gestures).The Creative, Performing and Appraising skills develop through three units of work; THE BULLY, MELODRAMA and EVACUEE. Students work with a given script but are also able to devise within the classroom on the given theme.

Year 8
In Year 8, students further develop their vocal and physical skills by experimenting with various theatrical techniques such as WAITING FOR GODOT and the theatre of the Absurd, BLOOD BROTHERS the musical and Shakespeare’s ROMEO AND JULIET. By concentrating on these well-known classics, the students further develop their understanding and enjoyment of how to analyse scripts.

Year 9
In the last year of KS3, year 9 are introduced to Welsh Modern Dramas of the 21st century. They study monologues by relatable characters and situations from TAFLIAD CARREG and CRASH. Also, by the end of their year, they will have studied the work of 20th century pioneer BERTOLT BRECHT, whose Epic Theatre techniques are studied in more detail at GCSE level. Again, students work to progress their performance skills working individually, in pairs and in a group.

KEY STAGE 4.
The drama syllabus contains a variety of practical work and a study of selected drama topics. Also visits to the theatre and seeing suitable drama productions on film and television are essential to understand and appreciate performance. The styles of several pioneers of the theatre are studied and candidates are expected to apply this knowledge in their work.

One play is studied in detail and therefore an opportunity is given to consider the various styles of writing of the dramatists, and the structure of the drama is discussed. A controlled assessment evaluating performance takes place following the first performance examination. The practical side of the course contains two practical examinations where the individual is expected to perform as a member of a group. 

Objectives
The course should foster in candidates:
- The ability to understand through group work the basic human experiences of characterisation and creating characters.
- An awareness of the elements which contribute to the complete dramatic presentation and the ability to use some of the skills which are found therein
- An appreciation of dramatic literature as the raw material from which the performance is created.
- Enjoyment and informal appreciation of dramatic presentations in the theatre and other media.

Assessment Scheme
Unit 1: Devising Theatre - Non Exam Assessment
Unit 2: Performing From a Text - Non Exam Assessment.
Unit 3: Written Examination - 1hr 30mins.
 - Section A : A series of questions on one set text from a choice of five:
    1. Romeo and Juliet William Shakespeare
    2. 1984 George Orwell, adapted by Robert Icke & Duncan Macmillan
    3. Cysgod Y Cryman Islwyn Fowc Ellis, adapted by Sion Eirian
    4. Dau Wyneb Manon Steffan Ross
    5. 100 Imaginary Body (Nick Hern Books).
 - Section B : One question from a choice of two requiring analysis and evaluation of a given aspect of a live theatre production seen during the course.

KEY STAGE 5.
Outline of AS and A2 courses:
AS:-

Unit 1– Performance Workshop: A practical performance which should include two pieces of work, one from a set text and one devised piece. One practioner must be applied to each. Exam between November and March.
Unit 2 - Text in Performance: Two texts from two groups, one pre 1900 and one post 1900. One question on each in relation to performance and a live theatre review.

A2:-
Unit 3 – Performance on a set Theme: Performance based on a theme, extract from a published text, a devised piece and a written report of performance. Controlled text within 24 hours of performance.
Unit 4 - Text in Context: Synoptic unit based on two texts from two groups of selected plays.
Section A/B - Questions based on whole play based on an actor preparing or director staging.
Section C - Unseen text from any period, create a ground plan, movement of character, lighting and sound, and discussion of concept and justification.
