KEY STAGE 3: FRENCH.
Year 7
Introductions and Greetings, Language around the classroom, Counting and giving your age, The days of the week and dates, Learning colours and adjectives, Saying where you live, Explaining your nationality, Describing your family, Talking about pets, Describing yourself, Talking about your personality, Talking about sport and leisure, Using the simple future to discuss leisure, Expressing opinion on activities and discussing regularity and the timing of sporting activities.

Year 8
Discussing leisure centre activities, Planning holidays, The weather, Describing your home, Talking about rooms in the house, Describing the location of rooms in the house, Using prepositions, Expressing opinions, Telling the time, Discussing daily routine, Talking about school subjects, Discussing your day in the past, Numbers up to 100, Discussing clothing, Meals in France, Shopping for food, Ordering at a restaurant and discussing healthy eating.

Year 9
Talking about yourself and others, Nationality, Age, Descriptions, Discussing leisure activities in the past and present, Describing weekends and holidays in the past, Giving opinions and questionaing others about their holidays. Comparitives and numbers, asking and answering questions about the family, expressing opinion, parts of the body, describing illness, going to the doctor or chemist, discussing healthy lifestyles. Learning about the main tourist attractions in Paris, discussing modes of transport, planning a future visit, shopping for souvenirs and eating out.

KEY STAGE 4: FRENCH & GERMAN.
In these days of European unity, the ability to communicate in a foreign language has become very important, and a language qualification will be extremely useful in many careers as well as in numerous social situations.

The course will lead to a GCSE in French and/or German. It is a challenging and enjoyable course of study for candidates of a wide range of ability.

• Develop understanding of spoken and written French/ German in a wide range of situations.
• Develop the ability to communicate effectively in French/ German by means of both the spoken and written word.
• Develop knowledge and understanding of France/ Germany and French/ German speaking countries.
• Develop positive attitudes to foreign language learning.
• Provide a suitable foundation for further language study and practical use of the language abroad.

Assessment Scheme
Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing are all assessed with each contributing 25% of the final marks. Each assessment has a higher tier (A*-D) and a foundation tier (C-G).

Unit 1: Speaking - Speaking exam
(Higher Tier: 10-12 minutes; Foundation Tier: 7-9 minutes)
Unit 2: Listening - Written Examination
(Higher Tier: 45 minutes; Foundation Tier: 35 minutes)
Unit 3: Reading - Written Examination
(Higher Tier: 1¼ hours ; Foundation Tier: 1 hour )
Unit 4: Writing - Written Examination
(Higher Tier: 1½ hours ; Foundation Tier: 1¼ hours )

School Exchange trips
Both French and German departments have long-term school exchange partnerships with Lycée St Sébastien, Landerneau, Brittany and Wüllenweberschule, Bergneustadt in Germany. Pupils taking GCSE in French and/or German will be given the opportunity to take part in these exchanges if they so wish. Week long exchange trips abroad are arranged by the school every year and provide pupils with the ideal opportunity not only to improve their linguistic skills but to familiarise themselves with everyday life in France and Germany. Further information may be obtained from the language teachers.

KEY STAGE 5.
FRENCH:
The courses will develop the student's understanding of and enthusiasm for the French language, enable him/her to communicate confidently and effectively in French, allow the student to develop awareness and understanding of French/Francophone contemporary society and culture through the study of prescribed topics

AS:-
Being a young person in a French-speaking society (e.g. family, relationships, trends, education and employment).
Understanding the French-speaking world (e.g. regional culture and heritage, leisure, art, film and music).

A2:-
Diversity and difference (e.g. migration, integration, cultural identity, marginalisation, discrimination, diversity, celebrating difference).
France 1940-1950: The Occupation and the post-war years.

Task 1: Oral Examination (15mins) - 12%.
Task 2: Listening, Reading and Writing (1hr 30mins) - 15%.
Task 3: 
Critical Response in Writing - Film (1hr 30mins) - 13%.

A2:-
Task 1: Oral Examination (15-20mins) - 18%.
Task 2: Listening, Reading and Writing (1hr 45mins) - 23%.
Task 3: Critical Response in Writing - Literary (1hr 30mins) - 19%.

GERMAN:

The Individual and Society (e.g. youth culture, education).

A2:-
Environmental Issues (e.g. pollution, global warming, renewable energies).
Social and Political Issues. (e.g. the role of the media, immigration).

SPANISH:
The Spanish AS course is a challenging course that will enable students to communicate fluently and confidently in the foreign language. It is a complete course in itself, but also provides a suitable base from which to progress to further studies. Studying Spanish AS will naturally enhance the European awareness of candidates. Similarly, opportunities will arise to explore the spiritual, moral, ethical and cultural dimensions of topics studied.
